Toronto's Alex Dean is one of Canada's foremost jazz saxophonists. Among the artists he has recorded and/or performed with are Gil Evans, Kenny Wheeler, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Phil Nimmons, the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra,  Brazilian  Guitarist Filo Machado, Gary Smulyan’s Octet, and New York pianist Bill Mays Chamber Jazz ensemble.  Dean has also held down the tenor chair with the Grammy-winning Boss Brass and the Juno-wining Rob McConnell Tentet, a group with which he performed at our festival's inaugural concert in 2005.  Here's what the Ottawa Citizen had to say about his latest album, At This Point: "..Dean's big, wide sound and his flair for long lines and altissimo declarations place him in a lineage that includes such virtuosi as Michael Brecker and Ernie Watts, as well as John Coltrane.." Dean's quintet features four other highly regarded Canadian jazz virtuosi who each deserve their own bio-page to do justice to their successful careers and impressive collaborations:  Ted Warren (Boss Brass) on drums , Loren Lofsky (Oscar Peterson Quartet) guitar , Kieren Overs (Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker) bass  and Brian Dickinson (Randy Brecker, Woody Herman) on keyboards.

Alex Dean's free workshop (4pm, Saturday, August 20, casa Mia Cafe) is presented by Mark's Work Wearhouse.
