St. Paul's Anglican Church

Presented by The Guardian

Meaghan SmithNot so long ago Meaghan Smith was an animator in Halifax with a bad case of stage fright.  She longed for a singing career but was overcome by nerves.  In typical fashion, she took the bull by the horns and faced her situation, deliberately seeking out performing opportunities at events like "open-mike" sessions.  At the same time she was writing songs and saving for what would become her self-made big break.. "The Crickets Orchestra".. the self-financed, independently recorded debut CD that attracted deals with big-time management and a heavy-duty record label.
Meaghan Smith is now an ECMA winner (2011 Best Pop Recording), a Juno-winner (2011 (New Artist of the Year), has performed at Lilith Fair, toured with k.d. lang and is no longer held back by stage fright.  Good news for those lucky enough to grab tickets for Meaghan's Saturday night concert in St. Paul's Anglican Church.  St. Paul's, with its unparalelled acoustics, should be the perfect setting for Meaghan's eclectic mix of styles.. everything from jazz to hip hop.
From jazz to hip-hop; yes, Smith is known for presenting familiar tunes in a not-so familiar way.  She describes the style as "modern vintage".  Here's how Meaghan describes that term: "I love music from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s but I’m not interested in simply recreating music that has already been done so perfectly. I also love modern music, samples, and electronic elements. So I combined them, all the while working hard to keep things really organic sounding."
Appearing with Meaghan Smith will be: Matthew May (keyboard), Austin Nicholson (bass) and Jason Mingo (guitar).
