St. Paul's Anglican Church

Presented by The Guardian

Sean Ferris is our 2011 “Doug Riley Artist”, a title awarded annually in honour of Doug Riley, the great keyboardist, composer and arranger who was an Islander-by-choice and passed away in 2007.
Sean is a composer, arranger and keyboard performer with a long-standing interest in modern compositional and performance techniques, making him a natural choice to present Doug's music in the warm acoustical setting of historic St. Paul's Anglican Church.   His compositions have been presented internationally and include electro-acoustic music, installations, experimental music videos, avant garde chamber and orchestral pieces as well as music for film television, dance and theatre.
As Doug Riley Artist, Sean will be performing a variety of pieces from Doug's vast body of work.  His tribute concert (Thursday, August 18, St. Paul's Anglican Church) will include an extensive lineup of first-call  musicians performing tunes from Doug's jazz repertoire as well as chart-topping hits from "Dr. Music", Doug's R&B/soul big band of the 70's and early 80's.   Guest artists will include drummers Alan Dowling and Matt MacEachern, bassists Chris Budhan and Devin Hornby,  guitarists Chris Corrigan and Norm Zocher, singers Meaghan Blanchard, Catherine O'Brien, Julain Molnar, Terry Hatty and Joey Kitson, pianists Don Fraser and Max Keenlyside, tenor solist Alex Dean plus a trombone/trumpet/sax horn line of Rowan Fitzgerald, Peter Bevan-Baker and Doug Millington.   With tongue-in-cheek exaggeration, Sean calls is a "cast of thousands", but in fact it's "just" 17 (so far).
Sean will also be treating us to some of his own compositions and a couple of his favourite covers.  Those who know Sean can count on a version of Jan Garbarek's "Mission: To Be Where I Am".
