Barrie Sorensen's extraordinary musical talent and commitment to the highest performance standards make him a fitting choice for this year's Doug Riley Artist.

Doug Riley was an undisputed keyboard master and prolific composer/arranger  who chose to live on PEI and whose sudden passing in 2007 was a hard blow to music lovers everywhere, especially in his adopted home province.  In Doug's memory the festival annually designates a leading Island musician as the "Doug Riley Artist".

Barrie Sorensen graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in jazz performance. He later studied privately in New York with the world renowned contemporary jazz saxophonist Bob Berg. Barrie spent several years performing in cruise ship show bands. While freelancing regionally, he was a member of the two-time ECMA award winning swing band, the Jive Kings.  Barrie has performed at the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra in Hairspray, The Full Monty and Guys and Dolls and has made frequent appearances as a featured performer in the Always on Stage Festival.  Not confined within the boundaries of jazz, Barrie has performed with the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra, Eklektikos new music project and has recently completed a successful classical concert series with his sister, acclaimed pianist Jacqueline Sorensen.

During his festival performance Barrie will be joined by the 20-member Charlottetown Jazz Ensemble.  The Charlottetown Jazz Ensemble has been performing the works of masters (Basie, Ellington, Mingus) and modernists (Mantooth, Mintzer) since its inception in 1995 when it was founded and led by.. Barrie Sorensen!   Among the tunes to be performed will be several of Barrie's own compositions or arrangements.
